The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that over 40 people, including children and health care workers, were killed in an attack on Al Mujlad Hospital in Sudan over the weekend.

The strike occurred on Saturday in West Kordofan, a volatile area near the front line of intense clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), whose conflict has raged since April 2023.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack and reiterated the urgent need to protect health facilities and workers. However, he did not identify the party responsible.

According to the WHO office in Sudan, the dead include six children and five health care workers, and the hospital itself suffered severe damage.

Meanwhile, Emergency Lawyers, a local human rights organization, blamed the Sudanese army for the strike, alleging a drone attack on the facility. The group initially reported nine deaths in a statement issued Sunday.

The conflict has led to widespread humanitarian crises, with repeated calls from international bodies for a ceasefire and protection of civilians.
