Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Focus on Nigeria’s Problems, Faults Power Sector Failures

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to remain in the country and confront Nigeria’s pressing challenges, criticising the Federal Government’s handling of electricity and governance.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign promise that Nigerians should not re-elect him if he failed to deliver steady electricity within his first term.

“No steady power in four years, no second term,” Obi wrote, noting that the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, with the month yet to end. He added that the grid collapsed about 12 times in 2025, describing the situation as a sharp contradiction of earlier promises.

Obi said the recurring power failures should worry every patriotic Nigerian, stressing that reliable electricity remains critical to economic growth and improved living standards.

He compared Nigeria’s power generation with that of Turkey, which has a population of about 87 million, roughly one-third of Nigeria’s population. According to him, Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles to produce less than five per cent of that capacity.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, urging leaders to focus on governance and service delivery rather than election politics.

“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,” Obi wrote, warning that continued foreign trips while domestic challenges persist would further erode public confidence.

He called on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership, saying collective action was needed to end the hardship and indignity caused by poor governance.
