The Police Command in Benue on Tuesday, says it has arrested three suspects over alleged armed robbery and cult activities in the state.
The Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet diaclosed this in a statement on Tuesday made available to newsmen in Makurdi.
Edet said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Vandeikya Local Government on Monday received credible information that some hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers were sighted within the area in possession of firearms and dangerous weapons.
She said that the DPO swiftly mobilised to the scene adding that during the operation the suspects were arrested.
According to her, following a search on the suspects one locally fabricated revolver pistol and a jack knife was recovered.
She said that the suspects were currently in police custody adding that investigations were ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Makurdi.
The Spokesperson also said that on the same date, the DPO of Yelwata Division received intelligence that suspected cult members were planning to attack rival cult groups at Udei, Guma Local Government Area of the state.
Edet said that the DPO also mobilised patrol teams in collaboration with other tactical units and moved to the area.
“He said that during the operation, one suspect was arrested, while other suspects fled.
“Items recovered from the suspect include a cutlass, knife, and hard drugs,”she said
She said that during preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to being a member of the MBS cult group.
She said that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while further investigation was being handled by the State CID, Makurdi.
The spokesperson said that the Commissioner of Police Mr Ifeanyi Emenari has reassured the people that the Command remained resolute in its determination to eradicate cultism and all forms of criminality across the state.
Emenari also urged members of the public to continue to support the Police with timely and credible information to enhance effective policing.
