At least 42 armed herders and suspected bandits have been apprehended by security forces across several communities in Benue State over their alleged roles in ongoing criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ifeanyi Emenari, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday in Makurdi.
Emenari explained that the arrests were part of intensified operations aimed at restoring peace in violence-prone areas. He said many of the suspects had already been arraigned, while investigations continue on others.
“About 20 of the arrested armed herders are currently on remand and awaiting trial, with several others still under investigation,” the commissioner stated.
He emphasized that the police had launched direct operations targeting those responsible for attacks and killings in the state. “Our tactical teams are operating actively in the bushes, taking the fight to the criminals,” he added.
The affected areas include Apa, Gwer West, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Ukum, Agatu, and Guma Local Government Areas, where joint security forces are conducting thorough patrols.
“Our mission is clear—to secure these communities so displaced residents can safely return and resume farming,” Emenari said.
He assured that all suspects under investigation would face prosecution once inquiries are completed.
