The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly exhuming corpses and selling human body parts to ritualists.

Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Friday, said the arrest followed a tip-off received by detectives at the Iyaganku Divisional Police Headquarters in Ibadan.

Acting on the intelligence, officers searched the residence of one of the suspects in the Muslim area of Ibadan, where they recovered a female human torso, severed limbs, and dried bones stored in bags and a paint bucket.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to exhuming a corpse from a cemetery in Awa-Ijebu, Ogun State, and selling the body parts to ritualists,” Osifeso stated.

Further investigations led police to the cemetery, confirming the suspect’s claim and resulting in the arrest of a second suspect, a septuagenarian, who confessed to buying human parts.

The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, with police intensifying efforts to track down others involved.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Ademola, has urged cemetery managers to heighten security and advised transport operators to inspect passengers’ luggage to prevent the transportation of illicit items.
