The Enugu State Police Command has detained Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba, 52, from Ezimo-Agu community in Udenu Local Government Area, on allegations of child trafficking and forgery.
The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, announced on Wednesday that the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad apprehended Dr. Ugwumba on September 28, 2024, after an investigation was launched based on a suspicious public notice about an abandoned child, published in a local newspaper and falsely endorsed in the name of the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development.
The investigation revealed that Dr. Ugwumba, who claims to be a graduate of medicine from the University of Jos and operates Chima Hospital and Maternity in Ugbaike, was involved in trafficking children. Police rescued a pregnant woman and two female children, aged four and two, during the operation.
Authorities also discovered that between 2017 and 2024, the suspect allegedly conspired with others, including a purported staff member of the Ministry, to deliver and traffic seven children from different mothers.
Additionally, Dr. Ugwumba was found with unauthorized documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and unverified certificates from the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources. Police continue to investigate the case, while efforts are underway to trace the missing children.
