The Nigeria Police Force has announced an investigation into the alleged unauthorized use of a police uniform by social critic Martins Otse, popularly known as “VeryDarkMan” (VDM), in a recent viral video. In the video, VDM is seen wearing a police uniform, addressing himself as “CSP VeryDarkMan” and calling himself the “number one online police,” a move that has sparked significant online debate.

In an official statement released on October 26, the Police condemned the unauthorized use of its official uniforms and symbols, emphasizing that such actions contravene Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. These sections outline penalties for individuals who misuse police insignia, uniforms, or accoutrements without permission.

The Force assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to trace the source of the police gear used in the video and establish whether VDM had any authority to don the uniform. In its statement, the Police expressed support for the creativity of young Nigerians in content creation but warned against actions that compromise the integrity of the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this portrayal and cautions against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols,” the statement reads, “Unauthorized use undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
