Police Neutralize Kidnap Kingpin, Arrest Two During Medical Students Rescue
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed that a notorious kidnap kingpin was killed, and two other kidnappers were arrested during an operation to rescue 20 abducted medical students.
Speaking at the handover of the students to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja on Sunday, Egbetokun stated that the suspects were in police custody and providing critical information.
The 20 students had been abducted on Aug. 15 in Benue State while traveling to Enugu. On Aug. 22, police rescued the students, along with five other passengers and two additional victims already held captive by the criminal gang.
“We successfully rescued 27 victims without any ransom paid,” Egbetokun said. “The kingpin was neutralized during a gunfight with our officers, and two other gang members were arrested, with weapons recovered.”
Egbetokun emphasized the complexity of the operation, highlighting the contributions of the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and local vigilantes. He credited teamwork and meticulous planning for the operation’s success.
The Vice Chancellors of the universities involved praised the Nigeria Police and other security agencies for their efforts. Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, noted that the university was preparing to provide trauma support for the rescued students.
