In a sudden development, all police escorts assigned to Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, have been withdrawn, leaving both her and the Assembly complex without official security protection.

Victor Ganzallo, the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Information, confirmed the withdrawal, expressing concern over the potential risks this poses. He stated, “As we speak, all security has been withdrawn from the Speaker, and she is now on her own,” highlighting her immediate vulnerability.

The reasons behind this abrupt decision remain unclear, as neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the state government has issued an official explanation. This lack of transparency has heightened public anxiety regarding the safety of high-ranking officials and the security of the legislative building.

This incident adds to the ongoing tensions within the Lagos State House of Assembly. Earlier reports indicated that Speaker Meranda has been under pressure to resign, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The Assembly has also faced internal disputes, including rumors of mass defections to opposition parties, which have been officially denied.

The withdrawal of security details from Speaker Meranda raises critical questions about the internal dynamics of the Assembly and the potential implications for governance and stability within Lagos State.
