The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has postponed its planned nationwide strike until December 2, allowing the Federal Government more time to address the union’s demands.
ASUP National President, Mr. Kpanja Shammah, confirmed this decision in a statement following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUP had previously issued a 15-day ultimatum on October 7 for the Federal Government to address issues concerning the National Board for Technical Education’s (NBTE) alleged interference in admissions for Higher National Diploma (HND) students.
The union’s demands also include calls for infrastructure upgrades under the NEEDS ASSESSMENT initiative, enforcement of promotions in state-run institutions, settlement of unpaid promotion arrears, and resolution of outstanding salary review arrears for January to December 2023 in federal polytechnics and colleges.
Shammah noted that a resolution meeting held by the Federal Ministry of Education on October 23 developed an action plan to address these issues.
“After reviewing the proposed action plan in an emergency meeting on October 24, the union resolved to defer its strike to December 2,” Shammah said, adding that ASUP expects the government to honor its commitment to each of the eleven disputed items.
ASUP urges the government to use this period to fulfill its obligations as outlined in the recent agreement.
