Pope Francis’ surgeon has revealed that the pontiff came close to death during a recent health crisis, and at one point, doctors debated whether to let him go.

Professor Sergio Alfieri, who led the pope’s medical team during his 38-day hospitalization, disclosed that February 28 marked the most critical moment of the pope’s health battle. “We needed to choose whether to stop and let him go, or to push it and try all the drugs and treatments possible, running the very high risk of damaging other organs,” he said. “In the end, that is the path we chose.”

Ultimately, Alfieri said, it was Pope Francis himself who made the decision to fight.

The doctor also acknowledged the global prayer support for the pope, saying he believed it played a role in his recovery. “There is a scientific publication according to which prayers give strength to the sick,” Alfieri noted. “I can say that twice the situation was lost, and then it happened like a miracle.”
