In a powerful gesture of hope and reconciliation, Pope Francis opened a Holy Door at a Rome prison on Thursday as part of the Catholic Church’s Holy Year celebrations.

“Do not lose hope; that is the message I want to give you,” the 88-year-old pontiff told inmates during the symbolic ceremony.

The event marked the first time in the Church’s history that a Holy Door was opened in a prison, according to Vatican News.

Arriving in a wheelchair, Pope Francis paused for silent reflection before rising with the aid of a walking stick. He approached the prison gate, knocked several times, and watched as it was raised from within. Crossing the threshold, he symbolized the passage into grace and reconciliation.

Known for his advocacy of forgiveness and the reintegration of convicted criminals into society, the pope’s visit underscored his commitment to bringing the Church’s message of hope to marginalized communities.

Despite recent signs of fatigue in public appearances, Francis appeared at ease, speaking informally to inmates and staff without prepared remarks. Following the service, he took time to engage personally with several attendees.

This event followed the pope’s ceremonial opening of the Holy Year 2025 on Christmas Eve, during which he unsealed the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Catholic Church celebrates a jubilee every 25 years, offering believers who pass through Holy Doors after penance and communion indulgences, or remission of sins.

The unprecedented opening of a Holy Door in a prison highlights Pope Francis’ vision of a Church that embraces all, especially those on the periphery of society.
