Pope Francis Spends ‘Restful’ Third Night in Hospital Amid Bronchitis Treatment

Pope Francis spent his third night in a Rome hospital without complications, the Vatican said on Monday, assuring that the 88-year-old pontiff had a “restful night,” ate breakfast, and read the morning newspapers.

The pope has been hospitalized since Friday for bronchitis, following days of health concerns as his voice faltered during public appearances and he limited his activities. Reports indicate that doctors had long advised hospitalization for treatment.

Francis, who lost part of his right lung in his youth, has often struggled with respiratory issues. Doctors have now ordered “absolute rest,” and while the Vatican initially estimated a five-day hospital stay, speculation is growing that he may remain longer.

As a result, the pope has canceled all scheduled appointments, while Vatican officials describe his condition as “stable.”
