A nationwide power outage hit Kenya early Wednesday, disrupting electricity and internet connectivity for several hours before being restored, according to Kenya Power, the country’s main utility provider.

The outage, which began at 1:28 a.m. local time (1028 GMT), affected large parts of East Africa’s biggest economy. Kenya Power announced on the social media platform X that electricity had been restored to affected areas by 7:35 a.m. local time (0435 GMT).

The cause of the blackout remains unknown, with investigations underway. The incident marks the latest in a series of recurring power disruptions the country has experienced over the past year.

The outage also significantly impacted internet connectivity across Kenya, according to Netblocks, a global observatory for internet access. In addition, Netblocks reported that neighboring Tanzania experienced disruptions linked to the blackout.

Kenya Power, which serves over 9.6 million customers, has pledged to address the challenges contributing to the frequent outages.
