Pregnant Widow Banished from Benue Community Over Alleged Shoplifting
A heavily pregnant widow has been banished from Ugbema community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State after she was accused of shoplifting.
According to reports, the woman, who recently lost her husband, was allegedly caught stealing small household items to feed herself, her young child, and her unborn baby.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2025, when local youths apprehended her and subjected her to public humiliation under the scorching sun before taking her to community elders.
It was gathered that the elders later instructed the youths to escort her out of the community as punishment for her alleged actions.
The decision has drawn widespread criticism from residents and social media users, who argue that the woman deserves compassion and support rather than public shaming, especially considering her vulnerable condition.
