Prince Harry has stepped down as patron of Sentebale, the southern Africa charity he co-founded in 2006, following an internal dispute that led to a leadership crisis.
The decision, announced in a joint statement with co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, follows a breakdown in relations between the charity’s trustees and board chair Sophie Chandauka. The UK-registered charity, initially focused on supporting young people affected by HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana, is undergoing a shift towards youth health, wealth, and climate resilience in Southern Africa.
Harry and Seeiso expressed disappointment over the leadership crisis, stating, “With heavy hearts, we have resigned in support and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same.”
The dispute escalated after several trustees resigned and called for Chandauka’s removal. Chandauka, a Zimbabwe-born lawyer, alleged she faced backlash for raising governance concerns, citing issues of power abuse, harassment, and discrimination. She has taken legal action in the UK’s High Court and reported the matter to the Charity Commission.
Harry and Seeiso countered that Chandauka had sued the charity to retain her position after trustees requested her resignation. The UK’s Charity Commission confirmed it is reviewing governance concerns at Sentebale.
