Protest Organisers Demand IGP’s Removal Over Alleged Killing of #EndBadGovernance Demonstrators
The organising committee of the #EndBadGovernance protest has called for the immediate removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) following the alleged killing of peaceful demonstrators. The demand was made public during a candlelight symposium held in Lagos on Friday to honour the victims.
Protesters at the event held banners bearing messages such as “Nigeria Mourns,” “Sack the IGP for the Senseless Killing of Peaceful Protesters,” and “President Tinubu, Meet All Demands Now.”
In a statement released earlier this week, the committee announced three days of mourning for those who lost their lives across the nation during the ongoing protests.
“Following a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, 6 August 2024, the organising committee has declared a three-day mourning period in Lagos State to honour our fallen colleagues, who were killed by trigger-happy police and security agents during the #EndBadGovernance protest,” the statement read.
The mourning period will begin on Wednesday, 7 August, with an X Space discussion and will conclude on Friday, 9 August 2024, with a public symposium and candlelight procession.
Amnesty International has corroborated reports that protesters were killed by security agencies in various states. The organisation’s findings indicate that security personnel at these protest sites used tactics specifically intended to kill, despite the demonstrators peacefully protesting against hunger and deep poverty.
