Russian President Vladimir Putin has strengthened ties with North Korea by gifting more than 70 animals, including an African lion and two brown bears, to the Pyongyang Zoo.
The animals, delivered by Russian Environment Minister Alexander Kozlov via cargo plane, also included two yaks, five cockatoos, mandarin ducks, and various pheasants, according to a statement on the ministry’s Telegram channel.
This gesture follows allegations from the U.S. and South Korea that North Korea has sent troops to aid Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Both nations have denied the claims, but their recent exchanges highlight a deepening alliance as they face Western sanctions.
This is not the first high-profile gift exchange between the nations. Earlier this year, Putin presented North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with 24 pure-bred horses, reportedly as gratitude for North Korea’s artillery support.
In another symbolic move, Putin gifted Kim a Russian-made Aurus limousine, tea sets, and artwork during a June meeting where the leaders pledged to protect one another against external aggression.
Analysts suggest this burgeoning partnership benefits both sides. Russia seeks support for its war in Ukraine, while North Korea reportedly eyes Russian space technology to bolster its missile program.
These exchanges underscore the evolving relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, raising concerns among Western nations about their growing collaboration.
