Real Madrid Fined €15,000 Over Fan’s Nazi Salutell
Real Madrid have been fined €15,000 after a supporter was seen performing a Nazi salute during their UEFA Champions League playoff second-leg match against Benfica last week.
European football’s governing body, UEFA, announced the sanction on Friday and added that the club would also face a partial stadium closure as part of the disciplinary action.
The Spanish club had earlier disclosed that it asked its internal disciplinary committee to begin an immediate expulsion procedure against the member identified as making the gesture.
According to the club, security officials identified the supporter shortly after the act appeared on the live broadcast and promptly removed the individual from Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
UEFA also ordered the partial closure of 500 seats in the stadium’s lower south stand for one match. However, the punishment has been suspended for one year and will only be enforced if a similar incident occurs during that period.
Real Madrid won the match 2–1 and advanced to the round of 16 with a 3–1 aggregate victory.
They will face Manchester City in the next round of the competition.
