Recapturing Aj Jazira Key to Sustainable Peace in Sudan – Official

The Sudanese Government has expressed optimism that the recapture of Aj Jazira state from the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will pave the way for lasting peace in the country.

Mr. Ahmed Taboul, Charge d’Affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in Nigeria, shared this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Taboul, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) successfully regained control of Aj Jazira, a key strategic and economic hub, marking a turning point since the conflict began on April 15, 2023.

“Aj Jazira is not just strategic; it is the second-largest state after Khartoum and serves as a vital junction linking national highways to most Sudanese cities,” Taboul explained.

The state, located less than 200 kilometers from Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, is also a major economic and political center. Its recapture by SAF provides an opportunity for further advances into other regions, including the western parts of the country, Taboul said.

“The southern part of Aj Jazira and other rebel-controlled areas have been retaken by national forces. The situation is now under full control of the Sudanese government,” he added.

Taboul noted that the RSF’s position has significantly weakened, with the group losing its command and central control. This development, he said, is a positive step for Sudan both politically and diplomatically.

He also revealed that Head of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is set to embark on a diplomatic tour to Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Mali, and Senegal to strengthen ties and seek support.

“The situation in Sudan is changing, and we are hopeful for a brighter future. Millions of displaced persons and refugees in neighboring countries can look forward to peace and stability across Sudanese cities,” Taboul concluded.
