The Nigerian music industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of fast-rising singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy.

Reports of the Afrobeats artiste’s death surfaced on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after a social media post by journalist Temilola Sobola announced his passing. He was 22 years old.

“Singer Destiny Boy has passed away. May his soul rest in peace,” Sobola wrote.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the singer’s death remains unknown, with neither his family nor management issuing an official statement.

Destiny Boy rose to fame at a young age and carved a niche for himself in Nigeria’s music scene with his distinctive street-pop sound. He first gained widespread attention in 2019 after his Fuji-style rendition of Davido’s hit song If went viral on social media.

The breakthrough opened doors for him to reinterpret songs by top Nigerian artistes, including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor, further growing his fan base.

In November 2024, the singer made headlines after welcoming his first child at the age of 20. Earlier in March 2024, he was also in the news following reports that he proposed to his partner with a diamond ring said to be worth millions of naira.

Following news of his death, fans, colleagues and social media users have continued to pour out tributes and condolence messages in his honour.
