Rotary International has renewed its unwavering commitment to the global eradication of polio, with Nigeria remaining a top priority in its expansive immunisation and advocacy efforts.
Speaking on Friday in Jos during the Rotary District 9127 Joint District Conference, Rotary International President, Stephanie Urchick, stressed that the fight against polio remains the organisation’s foremost global mission.
Urchick, who was represented by Dr. Daniel Ajawara, stated, “Polio eradication remains Rotary’s top global priority.”
The conference, themed “Unlocking the Magic of Rotary Through Impactful Humanitarian Services,” brought together Rotarians from across District 9127 to reflect on past successes and chart a path forward for greater humanitarian impact.
Urchick also disclosed Rotary’s growing commitment to broader health initiatives in Nigeria. She said, “Rotary has committed 2 million dollars to a ‘Programme of Scale’ initiative aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.”
According to her, Rotary’s interventions in Nigeria are designed to meet specific community needs and are often powered by global grants. These projects, she added, are executed through strong partnerships between local Rotarians and their international counterparts.
District Governor Mike Nwanoshiri described the conference—the first of its kind in District 9127—as a platform to evaluate achievements and strategise for scaling up humanitarian impact.
“This conference presents an opportunity to evaluate our achievements and strategise for scaling up our humanitarian efforts,” Nwanoshiri said, adding that key resource persons had been selected to share insights across various sectors.
The four-day conference, which began on May 14, is scheduled to conclude on May 17.
