New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has cautioned fans against drawing comparisons between him and Jose Mourinho, a former coach of the club.
In an interview with the club’s website on Friday, Amorim revealed that Mourinho sent him a congratulatory message following his appointment. However, the Portuguese tactician emphasized his desire to forge his own path and build a team that can compete for trophies.
“He sent me a message. It’s a big club, a lovely club with lovely people, and he’s correct—it still is,” Amorim stated. “We’re building a new identity. I’m a different guy. I hope to teach something different to my players here. It’s the best club in England, and we want to win—that’s all.”
Amorim acknowledged Mourinho’s illustrious record, including his Champions League triumphs, but stressed that his approach reflects the evolving nature of modern football.
“With Portuguese coaches, we’ve shown we can be among the best in the world. But I’m different from Mourinho. He was a European champion—I’m not,” he explained. “Football is different nowadays. I believe I’m the right person for this moment. I’m young and aim to use that energy to connect with my players. Their generation was Lampard and similar players; now, it’s a whole new world. I think I’m right for now.”
Amorim’s remarks signal his commitment to creating a fresh era for Manchester United, steering away from the shadow of his legendary compatriot.
