Hostilities between Russia and Ukraine intensified as Moscow deployed 145 drones in a large-scale overnight assault, marking one of its largest drone strikes against Ukraine. According to CNN, Ukrainian forces retaliated on Sunday by launching 34 drones targeting Moscow, as confirmed by Russia’s Ministry of Defense.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that all Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed by air defenses over Moscow’s Ramenskoye, Kolomna, and Domodedovo regions between 7 and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyov detailed the interception locations in a statement carried by CNN.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the Russian assault in a post on social media platform X, noting the surge in Russian strikes. “This week alone, Russia has deployed over 800 guided bombs, approximately 600 strike drones, and nearly 20 missiles across Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said, describing the attack as “terror” and calling for bold international decisions to achieve justice and lasting peace for Ukraine.
Since the conflict escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure have faced relentless attacks. Russia, frequently deploying missiles, drones, and bombs, has consistently denied targeting civilians, although international observers cite mounting evidence of airstrikes on residential areas.
Ukraine, with assistance from Western allies, has bolstered its air defense systems to counter the Russian onslaught. Yet, the sustained frequency and intensity of Moscow’s drone strikes underscore Ukraine’s call for advanced, long-range defenses to safeguard its territory and citizens.
