Russian Missile and Drone Attacks Injure 29 in Northern, Eastern Ukraine
Russia launched multiple missiles and drones overnight, striking northern and eastern Ukraine and injuring at least 29 people, according to Ukrainian military and local authorities on Sunday.
The attacks targeted the frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk, Ukraine’s air force confirmed via the Telegram messaging app. Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s border regions, while Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region aimed to disrupt Moscow’s ability to launch further assaults.
Ukraine’s air force reported that several missiles missed their intended targets. However, Russia launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile, an Iskander-K cruise missile, and six guided air missiles during the strikes, though the exact number intercepted remains unclear.
In Sumy, a missile strike resulted in the death of one person and left 16 others injured, including three children, local officials said. In Kharkiv, Governor Oleh Sinehubov reported at least 13 injuries, among them a 4-year-old child. Kharkiv city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, added that a gas pipeline was damaged, with two houses destroyed and 10 more suffering damage.
Ukraine’s air defense systems also intercepted eight out of nine attack drones launched by Russia, according to the air force, with the interceptions occurring over the Mykolaiv region.
Reuters was unable to independently verify these reports, and there has been no immediate comment from Moscow. Both sides continue to deny intentionally targeting civilians since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
