Sanwo-Olu Hails Nigerian Breweries’ Resilience, Seeks Stronger Government-Private Sector Collaboration
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended Nigerian Breweries Plc for its sustained investment and resilience despite the nation’s tough economic conditions.
The governor made the commendation on Friday when top executives of Nigerian Breweries Plc and its parent company, Heineken, paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos State Government House, Alausa.
Sanwo-Olu said the brewery’s continued faith in Nigeria reflected its genuine commitment to the country’s economic growth and social development.
He described the company as one of the nation’s longest-standing corporate organisations that had maintained relevance and impact in the beverage industry for over seven decades.
Recalling the company’s show of corporate responsibility during the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor praised its decision to retain workers despite factory shutdowns and production disruptions.
“At a time when profitability was uncertain, Nigerian Breweries showed compassion and responsibility by prioritising people over profit. That kind of resilience and empathy is what keeps the Lagos economy strong,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor assured the visiting delegation of his administration’s readiness to strengthen partnerships that would enhance business operations and community impact, especially in the areas of infrastructure, traffic management, and environmental improvements in industrial zones.
“Lagos must continue to do well for Nigeria to thrive. We recognise that our role as the commercial nerve centre comes with challenges, but we are determined to create a conducive environment where businesses can flourish,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also urged the company to deepen its social investment initiatives, particularly in education, health, and environmental sustainability, while commending its sponsorship of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award.
He noted that Lagos remained strategic to the company’s growth, given its population size and consumption pattern, assuring that the state government would continue to support industries that create jobs and add value to the economy.
The governor congratulated the newly appointed Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Thibaut Boldin, on his appointment and expressed optimism that the partnership between Lagos State and the company would grow stronger under his leadership.
“Your products have stood the test of time, and your corporate citizenship is commendable. We will continue to walk with you as partners in progress,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Earlier, Mr. Boldin reaffirmed the company’s confidence in the Nigerian market, noting that despite global economic challenges, both Nigerian Breweries and Heineken remained committed to staying in the country.
“We believe a lot in the future of Nigeria. Our recent investments, including in distil, demonstrate our belief in the beverage industry beyond beer, as well as our impact on local communities,” Boldin said.
He also emphasised the company’s passion for social causes, particularly the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative, which he described as a flagship programme celebrating excellence in education.
“We’re deeply attached to this project and look forward to having you, Your Excellency, as our chief host at the grand finale,” Boldin added.
The managing director further disclosed plans to mark the company’s 80th anniversary in 2026, promising a celebration that would honour both its legacy and future aspirations.
“Next year, we’ll celebrate 80 years of Nigerian Breweries, a milestone we want to make special. It will be a moment to reflect on our achievements and renew our commitment to Nigeria’s progress,” he said.
The visit ended with renewed commitments from both parties to deepen collaboration in key areas of infrastructure, social investment, and community development.
