Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel safeguarding lives and property in the state.

Speaking on Thursday during the sod-turning ceremony for the construction of 2,200 housing units at the former site of Obalende Police Barracks, Sanwo-Olu described the project as a bold step towards providing decent accommodation for members of the Nigerian Police Force.

The new development will feature one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom apartments, complete with modern facilities such as sewage systems, streetlights, and parking spaces.

“This project is part of the re-development and regeneration of our state, aligned with the THEMES Plus agenda of this administration,” the governor said. “We are committed to the welfare of our policemen and women, ensuring they have affordable, decent housing to support their crucial role in safeguarding our lives and properties.”

Sanwo-Olu noted that 21 housing estates have already been delivered across Lagos under his administration, and the police barracks regeneration is the next step in expanding access to quality housing.

He added that the project would be completed within two years to provide a conducive living environment for police officers, urging other state governments to adopt similar initiatives to revitalise police barracks nationwide.

Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun, who attended the event, commended the Lagos State government for addressing the dire state of police barracks, many of which were built over five decades ago. He expressed optimism that the project would enhance officers’ morale and pledged to personally oversee its progress.

Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, disclosed that 4,400 officers and their families evacuated from the demolished barracks had been compensated, ensuring a smooth transition for the redevelopment effort.

The project underscores Lagos State’s commitment to creating an environment that supports the efficient delivery of security services and aligns with the administration’s broader housing agenda.
