Saudi Arabia, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), hosted a major donor conference in Jeddah, raising over $1.1 billion to support displaced individuals across the Sahel and Lake Chad regions. The event, organized in collaboration with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), drew contributions from over ten donor countries and international agencies committed to addressing urgent humanitarian needs.
The conference aimed to deliver critical aid to people affected by conflict, climate challenges, and economic instability in countries including Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Mali. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) partnered in the initiative, underscoring the urgency of assistance in crisis-hit areas.
Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, KSrelief’s Supervisor General, expressed gratitude to donors, highlighting that their contributions exemplify global solidarity and enable humanitarian organizations to provide essential support. He affirmed Saudi Arabia’s continued commitment to expanding aid efforts and ensuring aid reaches those most in need.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha described the conference as a milestone in international unity, emphasizing the shared values of cooperation among participating nations and organizations. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Saudi Arabia’s leadership, stressing the necessity of sustained aid for the 30 million people in dire need across these regions, and urged for a coordinated end to conflicts and increased protections for civilians.
Saudi Arabia further solidified its pledge with an additional $30 million, raising its total commitment for 2024 to $51 million, reinforcing its dedication to humanitarian assistance across affected regions.
