Search Intensifies for Tech Tycoon, Others After Yacht Sinks in Sicily Tornado
British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among six tourists missing after their luxury yacht, Bayesian, was caught in a deadly tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, Italy.
The disaster claimed the life of Recaldo Thomas, the Canadian-Antiguan chef aboard the yacht, while four British and two American tourists remain unaccounted for. The Italian Coastguard believes the missing may still be trapped inside the submerged vessel. Survivors were treated at Di Cristina hospital in Palermo.
The British-flagged yacht carried 12 passengers and 10 crew members when it sank near Palermo at approximately 5 a.m. local time. Sicily’s civil protection agency stated that the group had unfortunately been “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Among the missing is Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, along with his wife, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer from Clifford Chance, and his wife. Morgan Stanley expressed deep shock, stating, “Our thoughts are with the Bloomer family as we await further updates.”
Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued alongside 14 others, including Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch’s firm, Invoke Capital, and her one-year-old daughter. Golunski recounted the terrifying ordeal of keeping her baby afloat amid the chaos. Her partner, James Emsley, also survived the incident.
Mike Lynch, dubbed the “British Bill Gates,” was cleared of fraud charges earlier this year regarding the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard. The search efforts continue as authorities work to locate the missing individuals.
