Senegal PM Criticizes U.S. Over Visa Denial for Olympic Delegation
Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has criticized the United States for denying entry visas to members of the country’s Olympic delegation, a move he described as “unacceptable” and damaging to international sports diplomacy.
Speaking during a press briefing, Sonko expressed disappointment over the refusal, saying the athletes and officials were set to participate in a key pre-Olympic training program in the U.S. ahead of the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
“This is a serious setback to our preparations and an affront to the spirit of global sporting cooperation,” Sonko stated.
He also used the opportunity to thank China for its continued support, highlighting Beijing’s role in providing training scholarships for Senegalese athletes and coaches.
The U.S. visa denial has sparked diplomatic and sporting concerns, particularly as the country prepares to co-host major international tournaments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
