Series of Earthquakes Shake Kariba Area, No Damage Reported

A series of earthquakes recently struck the Kariba area in Zimbabwe, sparking concerns among residents. However, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) confirmed there were no significant damages or casualties. The seismic activity, attributed to reservoir-induced factors from fluctuating water levels at the Kariba Dam, highlights the region’s susceptibility to tremors.

The first quake, recorded on Monday, December 23, 2024, measured 4.9 on the Richter scale and was centered approximately 19 kilometers southeast of the Kariba Dam, near Antelope Island. Historically, this area has experienced seismic activity since the dam’s construction.

ZRA CEO Munyaradzi Munodawafa reassured the public that the tremors did not compromise the dam’s safety. “The earthquakes that have occurred in Kariba and surrounding areas since the dam’s construction have not caused ground accelerations or vibrations significant enough to threaten the dam wall,” Munodawafa stated.

From December 1, 2024, to date, six additional earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.1 and 4.7 have been recorded in the region. The epicenters were located 19 to 40 kilometers southeast of Kariba Town, primarily within the Kariba reservoir and the Charara Safari Area.

ZRA conducted inspections and data reviews following the quakes, confirming the dam’s structural integrity remains intact. “Our monitoring systems show no abnormalities, and the dam’s performance aligns with operational expectations,” Munodawafa added.

While no immediate threats have been identified, authorities urged vigilance. Residents are advised to report unusual observations to relevant agencies. The Kariba Dam, jointly managed by Zambia and Zimbabwe, remains a critical resource for hydroelectric power, water storage, and flood control.

Seismic activity in the area is under continuous monitoring to ensure public safety and the dam’s operational integrity.
