A seven-year-old boy has died and two family members remain hospitalized after allegedly eating a poisoned Easter egg sent by a woman to her ex-boyfriend’s family in northern Brazil.

Authorities in the Médio Mearim region arrested 35-year-old Jordélia Pereira Barbosa on Thursday, April 17, accusing her of sending the deadly chocolate gift to a family in Santa Ines.

The victim, Luís Fernando Rocha Silva, died in the early hours of Thursday. His mother, Mirian Lira, 32, and sister, Evelyn Fernanda, 13, are in serious condition in hospital after consuming the same Easter egg.

According to local reports, the egg was delivered by motorcycle courier on the night of April 16, accompanied by a card that read: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.”

Mirian reportedly received a mysterious phone call later that evening from an unidentified woman who asked if the Easter egg had arrived. When Mirian confirmed she had received it and asked who was calling, the woman replied, “You’ll find out who it is,” and hung up.

The first signs of illness appeared in Luís, who was rushed to hospital. He died hours later. Mirian began showing symptoms while still at the hospital with her son. Evelyn also fell ill after eating the same chocolate.

Police have launched a full investigation into the case, and Barbosa remains in custody as authorities gather more evidence.
