Shan George sparks backlash over criticism of Tinubu’s CCTV plan for Plateau
Nollywood actress Shan George has come under heavy criticism on social media after faulting President Bola Tinubu’s plan to install 5,000 CCTV cameras in Plateau State.
The president announced the initiative during a visit to the state following a deadly attack in Jos, stating that the surveillance system would help security agencies monitor and identify perpetrators in real time.
Reacting via her Facebook page, Ms George questioned the feasibility of the project, citing electricity challenges in the state and describing the move as misguided.
Her remarks quickly triggered widespread reactions online, with many users disputing her claim and pointing out that modern CCTV systems can operate using solar power.
Several commenters criticised the actress, arguing that surveillance infrastructure remains important for improving security, especially in vulnerable areas. Others noted that such systems do not necessarily depend on the national power grid.
However, not all responses were critical. Some social media users supported Ms George’s concerns, arguing that Nigeria lacks the necessary infrastructure and enforcement systems to effectively utilise such technology.
Others also questioned the sustainability of the project, raising concerns about maintenance, vandalism, and broader systemic challenges facing security operations in the country.
The debate highlights ongoing public divisions over government security strategies, particularly in regions affected by recurring violence.
Ms George, a veteran in Nigeria’s film industry, is known for her roles in productions such as Outkast and Super Story.
