The Delta State Police Command has clarified that the husband of late Chief Shimite Bello is in protective custody and not under arrest, as speculated in some reports.
Police spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, made this known while addressing rumors suggesting the man was arrested in connection with his wife’s death.
According to Edafe, the husband was the one who alerted authorities after discovering his wife’s lifeless body.
“He called to report that his wife had died early that morning and said he was receiving threats from her family, fearing he could be attacked,” Edafe said. “We moved him to the station purely for his own safety.”
Edafe stressed that the husband has not been arrested. “His presence in our custody is for protection only at this point,” he stated.
The situation took a new turn after the deceased’s family lodged an official complaint, raising suspicions of foul play and alleging the husband may be involved in her death.
In response, the police have launched a full-scale investigation, including an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.
“We’re investigating thoroughly,” Edafe said. “Only an autopsy can tell us if this was a natural death or otherwise.”
He assured the public that the Command will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
