American singer-songwriter Angie Stone, known for her hit Wish I Didn’t Miss You, has died at the age of 63 following a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama.
A representative for the singer confirmed to Variety that Stone was involved in a fatal crash while returning home from a performance. She was the only casualty in the accident.
Her daughter, Diamond Stone, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, writing, “My mommy is gone.”
Stone first gained recognition as a founding member of The Sequence, one of the pioneering female hip-hop groups of the late 1970s. The group’s hit Funk You Up was later sampled by Dr. Dre in Keep Their Heads Ringin and by Bruno Mars in Uptown Funk.
After The Sequence disbanded, Stone contributed vocals for groups like Vertical Hold and Devox. She also co-wrote and provided backing vocals for D’Angelo’s first two albums and worked with artists like Lenny Kravitz, Erykah Badu, and Raphael Saadiq.
Over the course of her career, she released ten studio albums and was nominated for three Grammy Awards. Her latest album, Love Language (2023), featured collaborations with Musiq Soulchild and her son, Swayvo Twain.
Beyond music, Stone also pursued acting, appearing in films such as The Hot Chick and The Fighting Temptations, as well as taking on the role of Big Mama Morton in Chicago on stage.
Her passing marks a significant loss to the music industry, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow artists.
