South Africa Clarifies Passport Requirements for Nigerian Travellers Amid Social Media Uproar

0 2

South Africa has addressed misconceptions surrounding its visa process for Nigerian travellers, following widespread outrage on social media. The controversy stemmed from claims that President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Nigerians would no longer need to submit passports for visas.

The misunderstanding arose after Ramaphosa’s recent remarks were misinterpreted as introducing a new policy. In reality, the president referred to the existing online visa application system, implemented in 2019, which allows applicants to upload a certified copy of their passport digitally. However, travellers are still required to present their physical passports upon approval.

This system applies to over 30 countries, including Nigeria, and aims to streamline visa applications. The clarification highlights the ongoing rivalry between Africa’s two largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria, which has occasionally been fueled by anti-foreigner sentiments and competitive regional dynamics.

South Africa reaffirmed that the online process does not exempt Nigerian travellers from standard passport requirements, emphasizing its commitment to improving efficiency while maintaining security protocols.
