South Korea’s Yoon Removed From Office Over Martial Law Attempt

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has officially been removed from office following a unanimous ruling by the Constitutional Court to uphold his impeachment.

The decision, delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025, marks the end of a four-month political standoff that began with Yoon’s surprise declaration of martial law on the night of December 3, 2024. The court cited “grave violations of the law” and “negative effects on the constitutional order” as grounds for its ruling.

Despite the high political stakes, the impeachment process remained largely peaceful. Protesters gathered near the Constitutional Court in Seoul on Friday, holding signs and calling for Yoon’s resignation.

Yoon, a conservative leader, now joins the ranks of South Korean presidents ousted from power, underscoring the nation’s strong adherence to constitutional accountability.
