Tragedy struck in Abraka, Delta State, as three children were killed after a reckless driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tricycle and a nearby structure housing the victims.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred near Mcharty Beach when the driver of a GLK 350, reportedly speeding, veered off the road and rammed into a tricycle and a store where the children were present with their father.
The father, who sustained serious injuries, is currently receiving treatment at the Government Hospital in Abraka.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Security, Hon. John Enamuotor, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the children, stating that the driver may have been under the influence of drugs.
“Two vehicles were coming from the beach when this happened. They ran into the children and killed them on the spot,” Enamuotor said.
He decried the increasing rate of reckless driving in the area, calling for urgent action to prevent further loss of lives.
“I’ve been crying and speaking up for my people. We are tired of this. This accident happened along the old Benin-Abraka road in the late hours of April 21, 2025,” he added.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity or whereabouts of the driver, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
