Stakeholders in Nigerian basketball have called for fresh and transparent elections following the expiration of the board tenure of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

Concerned stakeholders on Tuesday confirmed that the tenure of the federation’s board officially ended on January 31, in line with provisions of the NBBF constitution.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Musa Kida was re-elected as NBBF president on January 31, 2022, in Benin City, during a period marked by leadership disputes and parallel elections within the federation.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, retired Col. Sam Ahmedu, a member of the outgoing board, said the 2019 NBBF Constitution clearly states that the board’s tenure commenced on January 31, 2022, and ended exactly four years later.

Ahmedu explained that the constitution provides that the tenure of any elected board begins immediately after election and swearing-in, which, in this case, took place in Benin City on January 31, 2022.

He stressed that adherence to the constitution is essential for the credibility and stability of the federation, adding that stakeholders are now demanding a new electoral process that is transparent, inclusive, and in line with established rules to ensure the integrity and growth of basketball in Nigeria.
