The Association of Good Governance in Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, and lawmakers at both federal and state levels to prioritize governance over political maneuvering.

In a statement signed on Tuesday in Abuja by its Convener, Dr. Mohammed Sani Abubakar, the group expressed concern over the growing trend of political disputes and distractions, which it said were taking attention away from pressing national issues.

“It is evident to all Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with the 36 state governors and members of the National and State Houses of Assemblies, has been elected to provide good governance and leadership for a term of four years. Following this period, all Nigerians will partake in elections to either select new leaders or retain the incumbents,” the statement read.

The group highlighted Nigeria’s mounting challenges, including high inflation, unemployment, and insecurity, stressing that these problems require urgent attention through innovative governance.

Citing recent political tensions, the association referenced the post-Supreme Court ruling crisis in Rivers State, the altercation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the abduction of Retired Brigadier Mahrazu Tsiga and Professor Abubakar el-Jumma from the Nigerian Army University, Biu.

“This is not the time to focus on who is leaving or joining the ruling APC; instead, we should prioritize providing good governance,” Dr. Abubakar stated.

The association urged President Tinubu and all elected officials to set aside political distractions and focus on accountability, efficiency, inclusivity, and equity in governance, emphasizing that political activities should be postponed until the appropriate time.

“The country is in urgent need of governance defined by accountability, efficiency, inclusivity, and equity, rather than political maneuvering,” the statement concluded.
