Switzerland Reopens Embassy in Iraq After 33-Year Closure

Switzerland has reopened its embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, after a 33-year hiatus. The embassy, which was closed during the 1991 Gulf War, remained shut until now, unlike other European missions that reopened earlier.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the improved security situation in Iraq has allowed for a renewed diplomatic presence. Switzerland aims to strengthen bilateral relations with Iraq, which has become an important mediator and bridge-builder in the Middle East.

“Iraq has consistently advocated for peace and security in the region,” the ministry stated, adding that Iraq’s energy resources and economic diversification present valuable long-term opportunities for Swiss export and investment.
