A Minnesota teen who was active in swimming and track and field has been remembered as a vibrant, compassionate young woman with big dreams, following her tragic death in what authorities are calling a “targeted act of violence.”

Kayli, a high school student and promising athlete, had hoped to study developmental psychology at the University of Minnesota. Her family, mourning the loss, described her as someone who made a lasting impact on those around her.

“Kayli made a positive difference in many people’s lives and will be deeply missed,” her obituary reads. “She always told people, ‘well, you’re stuck with me.’ The irony is that she is now stuck in our hearts forever.”

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty condemned the violence that claimed Kayli’s life.

“This was a terrible instance of extreme, targeted violence that took Kayli from her loved ones,” Moriarty said. “My thoughts are with her family during this extraordinarily difficult period. Our office will prosecute Mr. Lopez Xique to protect our community and hold him accountable for his actions.”

The investigation continues as the community mourns the loss of a beloved teen with a bright future.
