An 18-year-old woman, Dakalo Avheani Mulaudzi, has been remanded in custody after appearing at the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Friday, July 25, over the alleged killing of a 19-year-old man who reportedly raped her.

The case, which has drawn national attention and sparked debate over issues of gender-based violence and self-defence, was postponed to August 7 for a formal bail application.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Vuledzani Dathi, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Lwamondo, Khumbe village. Mulaudzi, who identifies as a lesbian, had reportedly been drinking with the deceased, Shonisani Mahwasane, at his home when the situation escalated.

“Mahwasane allegedly demanded sex with Mulaudzi despite knowing her sexual orientation. He reportedly said he wanted her to experience being with a man. He then allegedly threatened her with a knife and raped her,” Dathi stated.

Mulaudzi allegedly managed to seize the knife and stabbed Mahwasane multiple times in an attempt to defend herself.

The incident has divided opinion within the local community. While some residents are calling for justice for Mahwasane and question the account of events, others are urging authorities to consider the broader context — highlighting concerns about the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals and the reported rise of so-called “corrective rape.”

Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and Mulaudzi remains in custody pending her next court appearance.
