Thousands of troops from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, as President Donald Trump considers the next phase of Washington’s military campaign against Iran.

U.S. officials told Reuters on Monday that the deployment forms part of a broader military buildup in the region, adding to thousands of sailors, Marines and Special Operations forces already stationed there.

The paratroopers, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, include elements of the division’s headquarters, logistics units and a brigade combat team. Over the weekend, about 2,500 Marines were also deployed to the region.

Although officials did not disclose the exact destination of the troops, the move had been anticipated following earlier reports that the Trump administration was weighing options to expand its military footprint, including the potential deployment of forces inside Iranian territory.

While no final decision has been taken to send ground troops into Iran, the additional forces are expected to strengthen operational readiness for possible future missions. These could include high-risk objectives such as securing Kharg Island, which handles the majority of Iran’s oil exports.

Military planners have also discussed scenarios involving securing shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz and potentially extracting highly enriched uranium from Iranian facilities—operations that could require deeper and longer troop involvement on Iranian soil.

However, such options carry significant risks. Iran has the capability to target strategic locations like Kharg Island with missiles and drones, raising concerns about the safety of deployed forces.

Speaking on Monday, Trump said the United States was engaging with what he described as a “more reasonable regime” in efforts to end the conflict, while warning Tehran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open or face potential strikes on key infrastructure.

The prospect of deploying U.S. ground troops remains politically sensitive, given limited domestic support for the Iran campaign and Trump’s earlier pledge to avoid new prolonged conflicts in the Middle East.

Since the launch of Operation Epic Fury on February 28, U.S. forces have struck more than 11,000 targets. The campaign has resulted in over 300 American troops wounded and 13 service members killed.
