An Italian TikToker, Davide Garufi, has died by suicide after facing online harassment following his gender identity journey, authorities confirmed.
Garufi, 21, initially came out as a transgender woman and asked to be called Alexandra. However, months later, he reverted to his birth name and identified as non-binary, using male pronouns again.
His announcement sparked discussions among his followers, with some posting transphobic and abusive comments.
On March 19, Garufi was found dead at his family home near Milan, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Italian police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities are looking into possible third-party involvement, including incitement to suicide and improper firearm storage.
According to reports from Fanpage.it, the weapon used was found unsecured in a backpack at the residence. While initial speculation suggested online hate played a role, ANSA reports that the investigation is not directly linked to social media comments.
Investigators are analyzing Garufi’s phone and computer and have taken statements from his friends and boyfriend as part of the ongoing inquiry.
