Timi Dakolo Counters Pastor’s Criticism of Gospel Singers’ Performance Fees

Singer Timi Dakolo has responded to remarks by Femi Lazarus, lead pastor of Light Nation Church, who criticized the high fees some gospel musicians charge for church performances.

In a viral video, Lazarus condemned the commercialization of gospel music, stating that some worship sessions have turned into performances where ministers demand millions in fees.

“Many worship meetings in Nigeria have become performances. Somebody has charged N5 million to come here to sing. You will be amazed at the ruthlessness at which ministers charge,” Lazarus said.

Reacting via Instagram, Dakolo defended gospel musicians, arguing that they should not be expected to perform for free, especially when churches pay international acts significantly higher amounts.

“First off, I am not a gospel musician. I am a Christian that does music,” Dakolo stated. “I have been in the choir for years, seen it all—singing your heart out and trekking home. Yet, you invite foreign artists and pay them in dollars, fly them and their crew in, accommodate them in the best hotels, and cover logistics.”

He criticized the tendency to undervalue Nigerian gospel artists, stating that many choir members struggle financially.

“Now that the people have learned and understood their value, gaslighting has started. Many choir members struggle to feed and afford decent places to sleep. Many can’t even buy choir uniforms,” he added.

Dakolo also highlighted the professionalism behind music, emphasizing that years of training and effort go into the craft.

“As much as music and worship are spiritual, they are also art. Chord progressions, synchronization, harmony, and melody take years to perfect—that is what people are paying for. Value,” he argued.

The singer concluded by urging churches to fairly compensate their musicians, emphasizing that the music ministry is as important as any other in the church.
