Tinubu Approves Lifetime Salary for Retiring Senior Officers – Interior Minister
President Bola Tinubu has approved a policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring at the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, Commandant-General, and above, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The announcement was made on Thursday, August 28, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where Dr. Tunji-Ojo presented key achievements of the ministry under the Tinubu administration. The minister said the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve officer welfare and institutional performance across agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
The policy was disclosed in a statement signed by DCF PO Abraham, Head of Corporate Services and National PRO of the Federal Fire Service.
“The minister expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, affirming that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are reaping the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also announced that over 50,000 officers have been promoted in the past two years, addressing a longstanding backlog. Moving forward, officer promotions will be based on a new performance and capacity-based evaluation system.
As part of institutional reforms, the minister revealed that new training manuals have been developed, and construction of a world-class Fire Academy is currently underway. The academy, he said, will be built to meet global standards, benchmarking institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy in the United States.
Highlighting the importance of mental health and workplace wellbeing, Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured officers of continued support from the ministry. He also encouraged the Federal Fire Service to explore partnerships with the private sector to boost service delivery, infrastructure development, and modernization of firefighting operations in Nigeria.
