In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Carter’s lifetime of service and his enduring contributions to humanity.

“President Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was a beacon of service to humanity, demonstrating to leaders worldwide the profound impact of dedication beyond the highest office,” Tinubu stated.

He highlighted Carter’s post-presidential achievements as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and global statesman, noting his commitment to peace, democracy, and eradicating tropical diseases.

Tinubu described Carter as a leader who remained impactful after leaving office, addressing critical global challenges, including disease eradication and conflict resolution.

“He tackled the challenges faced by the developing world, promoting democratic values and mediating conflicts with grace and dignity. His profound respect for humanity was exemplary,” Tinubu said.

The president remembered Carter as a compassionate ally of Nigeria. Through The Carter Center, the former U.S. leader played a pivotal role in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria, significantly improving lives across the country.

Tinubu also reflected on Carter’s historic visit to Nigeria in March 1978, which he described as a turning point in U.S.-Africa relations.

“Under Carter’s leadership, this visit marked a pivotal moment in U.S. foreign policy, fostering a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria at its core,” he noted.

President Tinubu expressed hope that Carter’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and leadership would continue to inspire leaders globally.

“His decency, character, and humanity, both in and out of office, serve as a guiding light for all who aspire to embody the true essence of leadership,” he concluded.
