Tinubu Pledges Review of New Constitution Proposal by Patriots
President Bola Tinubu has assured a group of eminent personalities, known as ‘The Patriots,’ that their request for drafting a new constitution will be thoroughly reviewed.
The group, led by former Commonwealth Secretary General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, made the request during a visit to the President in Abuja.
Chief Anyaoku, speaking on behalf of The Patriots, urged the President to propose an executive bill to the National Assembly. The bill would call for the convening of a national constituent assembly tasked with drafting a new people’s constitution.
The assembly, he suggested, should consist of directly elected individuals from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, assisted by constitutional lawyers representing each geo-political zone.
Anyaoku further requested that the resulting draft constitution be subjected to a national referendum, allowing Nigerians to decide its adoption.
President Tinubu expressed his respect for The Patriots and emphasized his commitment to good governance and national unity. While acknowledging the longstanding call for constitutional reforms, he noted that his administration’s current priority is economic reform.
However, he assured the group that their proposal would be given due consideration in due course.
Tinubu also praised the contributions of The Patriots’ founding members, including Chief Rotimi Williams, SAN, and Professor Ben Nwabueze, to Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
He promised to invite Chief Anyaoku for further discussions on the group’s submissions, expressing his belief in the necessity of constitutional measures to address Nigeria’s diverse challenges.
