Tinubu Returns to Abuja After China Visit, UK Stopover
President Bola Tinubu is set to return to Abuja on Sunday following his official trip to China, which included a brief stop in the United Kingdom.
President Tinubu departed Abuja on August 29 for China, where he held key bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 2 at the Great Hall of the People. The meeting marked the signing of five major Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Nigeria and China, according to a statement by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Among the agreements signed were a cooperation plan to support the Belt and Road Initiative, partnerships on nuclear energy, human resource development, media exchanges, and a significant infrastructure project. One of the MoUs involves China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) building a 68 km Lagos Green Rail Line, linking the Lekki Free Zone to Marina.
In addition to the infrastructure projects, a $1 billion iron ore-to-steel project for Kogi State was also sealed between Nigeria’s Chart and Capstone Integrated Limited and China’s Sinomach-He.
During his stay in China, Tinubu also visited leading Chinese firms such as Huawei and CHEC, reinforcing Nigeria’s collaboration with China in technology and infrastructure. As Chairman of ECOWAS, Tinubu delivered an address at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, highlighting the importance of multilateralism for global peace.
Before returning to Nigeria, President Tinubu stopped in London, where he met with King Charles III to discuss climate change and related issues.
His trip marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s international relations and economic partnerships.
